Places to Visit in Tarragona
The Roman archaeological complex in Tarragona is simply exceptional. The city boasts the largest Roman city wall built outside of Italy, the largest public square in the Roman Empire (the Provincial Forum), an amphitheater overlooking the sea, a 290-meter-long circus, and the Ferreres Aqueduct (217 meters long)—one of the finest examples of ancient hydraulic engineering still standing.
The Tarragona Archaeological Museum is the perfect way to round out your visit. The city is also known for its Serrallo fishing district, its Modernist buildings, and its medieval cathedral in the heart of the old town. The Santa Tecla Festival
Among the must-see events, the grand Santa Tecla Festival (Saint Thecla) is undoubtedly the year’s biggest popular celebration: castellers, giants, fireworks, and the Seguici Popular fill the streets of the old town with an electric atmosphere—not to mention the grand finale featuring the impressive “human towers” of La Mercè.
Designated a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 2002, this celebration dates back to 1321. This year, the festival will take place from September 15 to 24.
