Wine tourism is an activity that, as its name suggests, involves exploring a place, a city, a region, or a country through its wine-growing regions and the wines produced there. It is a type of tourism that can be described as rural and encompasses a variety of activities, depending largely on the location where it takes place.

Aujourd’hui, six appellations d’origine (DO) font de la région l’une des destinations d’œnotourisme les plus riches d’Espagne, accessible en quelques minutes depuis le camping La Pineda près de Salou.

Tour of Vineyards in the Tarragona Designation of Origin (DO)
Tarragona, like the vineyard, is one of the symbols of Mediterranean culture, and it is this very vineyard that is one of the hallmarks of the Costa Dorada. The landscape shaped by these vineyards, the vast cultivated expanses, and the harvested produce simply define the region’s character and history.
The province of Tarragona has six DO regions: Tarragona, Priorat, Montsant, Conca de Barberà, Penedès, and Terra Alta. Each one expresses a unique terroir, shaped by the Mediterranean climate, slate or limestone soils, and varying altitudes ranging from the coastal plain to the mountainous hinterland.
The Priorat DO is the most prestigious: recognized as one of only two AOCs in Spain, along with Rioja, it produces red wines with remarkable intensity, made from old Grenache and Carignan vines growing on black schist (llicorella). The surrounding DO Montsant offers more accessible wines with excellent value for money. Tarragona, Conca de Barberà, and Terra Alta round out the picture with fresh whites, expressive rosés, and fruity reds. Most wineries in the province of Tarragona offer tours with tastings by appointment.

To help you navigate your wine tourism adventure, we strongly recommend planning your itinerary in advance so you can explore all the existing Designations of Origin. As for areas near La Pineda Campground, it’s best to focus on the Tarragona Designation of Origin and its wine route, the Priorat Designation of Origin, and the Monstant Designation of Origin. These are, in fact, the closest ones geographically, accessible within a 30- to 60-minute drive.
Before you go, plan your itinerary by selecting two or three wineries. Most offer public tour times and accept individual reservations.
